Off shore drilling for gas and oil update- as I understand

In the sector of off-shore drilling for gas and oil extraction there has been a crises of late. North sea platforms have shut down. A huge number of mariners who work on the  rigs ,supply ships, have been laid off in the automn, and are without work at this moment in history.

This branch of work at sea- usually being the best paid,  means that men who are accustomed to high stress work , 24 hours a day, but also very high wages are suddenly finding them self - unimaginably  unemployed.

This in it self is a shock to the men. Many are looking for other forms of work at sea . Others are starting new businesses on land with their savings. Few men are left working in their field.. However as there is very little work, agencies and ship owners are now in a position to offer much smaller wages. Not much smaller, but half the wages of which the where paying before Christmas, and daring to offer even less than that.

The sailors are sudnely in a sitation where they must ether accept half their wages, or go without a job.
