This morning the mariner has left the country. He has sat on an aeroplane in Split and was swallowed up by the fly route intestines and aeroplane stomachs.
Our project has begun.
With his taking off.
He will send me journals or log entries, and I will interpret the words the emotions and the descriptions he sends, with paint, into visuals.
In a way its quite romantic, this letter writing , and reminds me of the journals of the famous mariners like the croat Joža Horvat. They used to write, send their letters via the seas, to be published in the newspapers and where keenly read by a public far away from their reality. Captain Cook's adventures inspired the stories of Peter Pan and Captain Cook..
The lives of the mariners are completely different from lives of people on land. The water is so seductive, can be deadly, can be repugnant to some people yet there are those who can not live without the sea. I am one of them, perhaps, but haven't the guts to go all the way, I dip in and away , so find myself fascinated by those who are entrapped in living at sea ,always, as if living enchanted and physically bound to water. This is why I started this project. So I can make the pictures , as pictures are often more effective than words.
I will not write interpretations and stories about this sailor. I will paint his own stories.
I have begun this project all romanced up with my own preconception of beautiful ocean-scapes. And in the short time, I have been in correspondence with the sailor, I have entered into so much more than expected. Internal battles, politics, philosophy, economy, the pain od distance and separation, the value of money, touching down on the oil and ship industry elements and a discovery of a new culture trough the eyes of a stranger, enveloped in huge dose of sharp observation and wit.
Hence you are invited to follow the adventures of a contemporary mariner, all you who live in flats in cities, or in the country side or are like I always lured by anything involving the sea. Follow our project as it happens on this blog. Follow the sailor on his rounds with me.
I shall be here, constant, keeping you informed, being a base back on dry land to the sailor, and documenting what happens out there ..
